02 · History

From four faculties to a classical university

On 18 October 1945 a decree established a state university in Uzhhorod - the first higher education institution in the thousand-year history of Zakarpattia. Teaching began with four faculties: history, philology, biology and medicine. The botanical garden on the slopes above the Uzh was laid out in the university's very first year.

The post-war decades brought rapid growth: law, physics, mathematics and chemistry faculties opened, research schools took shape, and enrolment grew from hundreds to thousands. In October 2000 the university was granted national status.

Today UzhNU is the largest university of the region: around twenty faculties, over a hundred departments, English-taught medical programmes, and campuses on both banks of the river - from the historic city centre to the Student Embankment. The official university website is uzhnu.edu.ua.

Medicine in English

English-taught medical programmes attract students from dozens of countries, from India to Nigeria, making the campus notably international.
